DIALING IN TO THE MATRIX USING YOUR DESKTOP COMPUTER

WARNING DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE A MOBILE PHONE WEB BROWSER WHEN SIGNING UP
The web client does not support mobile browsers and it will be unusable. Furthermore When you sign up, encryption keys will be generated for you, and you will have to verify new applications using the device that you used to sign up, but the interface for doing so will not appear correctly on a mobile web browser.

If you are using a mobile device please visit THIS page

Entering the matrix via a desktop computer is easy. Simply visit matrix.vexillomancy.org

If you wish to use a desktop application after signing up we recommend element-desktop. When logging in using the desktop application, make sure you change the home server matrix.vexillomancy.org

Features that are required:

  • E2EE - our default channels are encrypted*

Features that are strongly suggested:

  • Threads - we use threads in conversations often
  • Spaces - improves organization of channels, strongly suggested if you want to join external matrix channels
Clients we recommend for advanced users:
  • Nheko - dated user interface but supports advanced features
  • iamb - Terminal based matrix interface
  • Ement.el - Emacs based matrix interface
Clients we do not recommend:
  • Cinny - very aesthetically pleasing interface but does not support threads
  • Fluffy chat - very good interface but does not support threads
  • Element X - still very experimental and lacks most features.
*you can access encrypted channels via a client that does not support encryption via a middle-layer like pantalaimon but this is fairly advanced
